IMPROVING LITERACY THROUGH SCHOOL LIBRARIES (LSL) - 2011 COMPETITION

 With budgets being frozen or altogether nonexistent, this is a perfect opportunity for us to work together to obtain funding for eligible districts and your respective libraries.
THE AVERAGE FY 2010 AWARD WAS $350,000!

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT FULL APPLICATION IS MARCH 28, 2011.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This program helps LEAs improve reading achievement by providing students with increased access to up-to-date school library materials; well-equipped, technologically advanced school library media centers; and professionally certified school library media specialists.

TYPES OF PROJECTS:
Districts may use funds for the following activities:

  • Purchase up-to-date school library media resources, including books;
  • Acquire and use advanced technology that is integrated into the curricula to develop and enhance the information literacy, information retrieval, and critical-thinking skills of students;
  • Facilitate Internet links and other resource-sharing networks;
  • Provide professional development for school library media specialists of PK-3 students and provide activities that foster increased collaboration among library specialists, teachers, and administrators of PK-12 students; and
  • Provide students with access to school libraries during nonschool hours, weekends, and summer vacations.

ELIGIBILITY Who May Apply:
Local education agencies (LEAs) in which at least 20 percent of students served are from families with incomes below the poverty line may apply. Click here for current poverty rates.

THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION will conduct two webinars to discuss the application process and discuss how to submit an application through www.grants.gov

o   The webinar for novice applicants will be held Feb. 14, 2011.

o   The webinar for experienced applicants will be held Feb. 22, 2011.

  • Demonstrate funding and purchasing needs through high-impact aged title and call number reports
  • Use genre, high/low and graphic novel search to select fiction

  • acquire up-to-date library media sources correlated to curriculum standards (books)
  • acquire engaging and relevant technology products (Capstone Interactive Library & PebbleGo)
  • provide professional development (here) to ensure effective implementation strategies (Capstone Interactive Library)

 

USE OF SCIENTIFICALLY BASED RESEARCH (10 points)
